Departure from your accommodation between 2:30 and 3:00 PM to travel to the town of La Tirana to witness the eve of the Tirana Festival. The night of July 15th and 16th is the most important of the entire Fiesta.
Arrival at dusk, just in time to witness the vigil, when the various groups light bonfires in the town’s streets and set off fireworks, flares, and firecrackers in anticipation of midnight.
Then at 8:30 p.m., we’ll enjoy a hot snack of tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and traditional sweets like alfajores and the famous Iquiqueño chumbeque, to sweeten the wait.
When midnight arrives, all the religious dances that honor the Virgin of Carmen will begin to dance, covered with an impressive faith and religious fervor. There are more than 180 brotherhoods or dances with their brass and percussion bands dancing dressed as Dakota, Sioux, Cherokee, Apache, Gypsy, Arab, Chinese, Hindu, Chuncho, Cuyaca, Zambo and Devils. At midnight, there will be fireworks and all the dancers will play their matracas, their bass drums, and all their musical instruments.
We will begin our return journey around 2:00 a.m., returning to Iquique at dawn.
