ARCHAEOLOGICAL TREKKING TOUR IN HUATACONDO RAVINE

The Huatacondo ravine or Huaca Cunturi in Quechua, which means Huaca del Cóndor, is one of the largest ravines in the Tarapacá Region, located to the south-east of the Region, 180 km from the city of Iquique.  It is born in the heights of Huinquintipa on the border with Bolivia and ends next to the south side of the Challacoyo hill (APU).

It contains arable land in Copaquire, Igua, Cautenisca, Huatacondo, Tiquima and Tamentica, the only town in the ravine being Huatacondo located at 2,320 meters above sea level, a place chosen by its inhabitants to develop agricultural activities for the cultivation of alfalfa and various fruits such as Oranges, Guavas. , Easter pears, quinces, lemons, prickly pears, among others.

Departure from the place of lodging between 05:00 and 05:30 am, to cross the Coastal Range and enter the Desert, and reach the ravine and town of Huatacondo and carry out the archaeological Trekking activity: hiking that consists of walk along trails over natural settings such as mountains, ravines, forests, rivers and inhospitable deserts, in order to obtain greater contact with nature and the original peoples who inhabited these settings over time.  In this excursion our objective will be a walk of observation and interpretation of the archaeological sites of natural corners.

We will visit the attractions: Pre-Hispanic Village, Colonial Geoglyph, Dinosaur Footprints, Petrified Waterfalls (Trekking), and Huatacondo Town.   Return to hotel in Iquique at 8:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Advices: Wear light sports clothing, trekking shoes, sunglasses and a jockey to protect yourself from the sun. Camera where possible and wear a personal Covid-19 prevention mask.

Tour Not suitable for infants and adults with heart or lung problems, such as angina pectoris, coronary heart disease, pulmonary dysfunction, etc.

Rates:  Adult rate: CLP $180.000 / USD 220 p/person.

  • Children over 9 years old are admitted at the adult rate, as it is a Trekking activity.
